its bloody hot in Spain

hill

Hey guys,

Thought Id start my latest post by drawing attention to the fact that whilst you lot in Aus are dealing with freezing cold Sydney its been about 30 degrees straight for the last two weeks! I love the Spanish sun! I especially am loving the fact that since I don’t start work until 2pm I can spend the morning at the beach working on my tan :)

jealous yet? Good. So what else is new? Well, there’s the bunny. You can read all about him in the post below. Hes very cute. Apart from pissing on the couch a couple of times hes managed to squirm his way into our affections. Hes taken to jumping onto my lap and crawling up to my neck and snuggling in. He has now progressed form carrots to spinach, cucumber and capsicum. He’s an eating machine and has fattened up considerably from when he first arrived as a scrawny runt.

Work is going pretty well. Im almost at the end of my 3 month contract but we’ve decided to extend it for another six months. It has been especially busy for me this weekend as my boss is out of town, leaving me in charge, managing the bookings, checkins and sorting out dramas like leaking showers.

Last night I got a call from some clients at 2:30am. They had locked themselves out of their apartment. Having gone to bed early with a headache the last thing I felt like doing was getting dressed and finding a cab on Las Ramblas to go down there and bail them out. Alex came with me for protection and the chance to practice some spanish with the colombian cabbie who took us down there and back home. Im under strict instructions form the boss to turn the phone off when I go to bed now as a result!

I guess it comes with the territory of dealing with tourists and apart from the odd dose of writers block I am enjoying what Im doing, for now at least. Im lucky to be working in English and speaking in Spanish, not to mention the afternoon shifts which has made life a lot more fun in general, being able to enjoy the mornings with Alex or at the beach or doing the shopping, etc and then being able to go out after work and not have to wake up early the next day. It makes me feel alive to be able to go out with friends for a few drinks after work on a Monday night and not make it home until 2am. Its definitely a city with somewhere to go out any night of the week.

We have also recently started spanish classes again, in our house. We put up and ad and found Lucas, a guy from Argentina who is studying in BCN. He comes twice a week for an hour and a half class. We are both enjoying studying again, especially because it seems just that bit easier re-learning something you’ve already dealt with. Its helping to solidify some of the grammar and conjugations that felt a little bit out of reach when we went over them last year.

It has been almost a year since we’ve been here which seems crazy to say the least, but one thing is for sure and thats were both having an absolute ball. It really feels like home here now. We both have work and social lives and plans for the future. Were learning new things and enjoying ourselves in the meantime. I still cant get over the fact that in the markets not far from our house we can buy a kilo of cherries for 1.5 euros, or that the beach is a 15 min bike ride away, or that we can now interact with the locals in a foreign language. Its such a great city to enjoy. If you havent already been, you definitely should. Especially while we have a double fold out sofa bed right in the centre of town!

We don’t need the gloating from distant warm lands thank you!
Gismo is very lovable looking but he could almost be taken for a long eared cat, which would be dangerous around here.
Can’t believe that you are reaching the anniversary of the beginning of your Spanish life. Your description of your daily routine sounds enviable.
I frequently see little bits of Spanish news items but they are usually quirky & probably don’t make news in Barcelona.
    Lots of love

How’s the toilet training going? Is Gizmo getting the idea? Hope he does not think that the couch is the way to go - try the newspaper or straw trick - check the net for hints - there are lots of sites I have found. Guess you are happy with a loving , furry companion again.Bunnies can be eating machines so be careful not to overfead. So much for the worried grandmother routine! Only two months and we’ll be seeing you. The travel Doc has to be visited first to make sure all is up to date - we rang and they said something about typhoid boosters(?) but we have to go in for a check up?LOVE YOU LOTS
